Galvanized Field Fence Roll

Galvanized Field Fence Roll

FIELD FENCE deer fence is the strongest fence type with increased post spacing, highest visibility and low maintenance-which takes advantage of fixed knots formed by using separate wires to tie the continuous horizontal and vertical wires together without sliding.

Galvanized Field Fence Roll: The Zinc Is the Lifespan

Every knotted field fence we weave starts as galvanized wire - that part is standard. What is not standard is how much zinc is on it. Two rolls can carry the same spec sheet and differ by 15% in weight, and the difference is almost entirely zinc. One fence stands 20 years in dry inland pasture; its cheaper twin starts showing rust at the knots in year seven.

This page is about that difference. We make fixed knot and hinge joint field fence from hot-dip galvanized wire in both coating classes, in rolls from 50 to 200 meters, and we would rather explain the zinc numbers now than have you find them out at year eight.

Zinc Coating Classes, In Numbers That Matter

In the wire fence trade, "galvanized" is not one thing. The two classes you will meet in quotations are Class 1 and Class 3, and the gap between them is the single biggest lifespan decision on a woven fence:

Coating class

Zinc weight (typical)

Expected service life

Where it belongs

Class 1 – standard

~85 g/m²

7 – 11 years

Dry inland climates, short-rotation paddocks, budget perimeters

Class 3 – heavy

~245 g/m²

15 – 25 years

Humid regions, livestock pressure, any fence you do not want to touch again

Three things worth knowing that most spec sheets will not tell you:

Rust starts at the knots. Field fence is woven from pre-galvanized wire, and the knotting action rubs the crossing points. Zinc protects sacrificially - it creeps across small scratches and seals them - but the knots are still where the coating is thinnest and the wire is work-hardened. When a Class 1 fence begins to die, you will see it there first.

A fence retires at its groundline. The bottom two wires sit in dew, manure and soil moisture every morning of their life. No coating class survives ground contact as long as it survives free air - the smart move is ordering the bottom edge wire one step heavier, which costs very little on a full roll.

Weigh the roll. If you are comparing two quotations on "the same" fence, ask for roll weights. Same height, same length, same wire count - a lighter roll means less steel or less zinc, and you deserve to know which.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a galvanized field fence roll last?
Class 1 zinc typically runs 7–11 years before rust-through at the knots; Class 3 runs 15–25. Climate moves those numbers more than anything else - dry inland pasture is the best case, humid coastal air the worst. The groundline wires will always be the first to go.

Is the fence galvanized before or after weaving?
Before. Field fence is woven from pre-galvanized wire - a finished knotted roll cannot go through a hot-dip bath without the knots distorting. The zinc's sacrificial behavior is what protects the rubbed crossing points afterward.

Which zinc class should I order?
If the fence is within sight of salt spray, or you run cattle against it daily, Class 3 - the price gap is small next to a re-fence. For dry-land paddocks that get rotated and replaced anyway, Class 1 is honest value. We will tell you which one your project actually needs, even when it is the cheaper one.

How many rolls fit in one container?
It depends on height and wire count - a light 1m hinge-joint roll packs far tighter than a 1.8m fixed-knot with heavy stays. Send the spec and we will return a loading plan with exact roll counts and weights.

Can I add barbed wire on top?
Yes, and on ranch perimeters we recommend it - two lines of double-strand barbed above the mesh take the animal pressure off the top edge wire. We can pack the barbed line into the same container.

My site is right on the coast - is galvanized enough?
Honestly: zinc alone is a compromise in heavy salt air. Class 3 buys you years, not immunity. If the budget allows, ask us about polymer-coated wire options for the exposed runs - and if it does not, plan the coastal stretch as the section you re-fence first.
