Gabion Walls for Construction

Gabion Walls for Construction

Gabion walls are a structural form that perfectly combines functionality, economy, ecology, and artistry. It is not only one of the oldest engineering technologies, but also a "green" solution that conforms to modern sustainable development concepts. Whether in grand engineering projects or exquisite private gardens, it can create landscapes and buildings that are both sturdy, durable, and naturally harmonious with its unique charm.

Gabion Walls for Construction

On a civil site, gabion walls show up wherever a contractor needs retaining today and structure next month: bridge abutments on rural roads, culvert headwalls and wingwalls, canal walls, cutting walls, and the boundary walls around industrial yards. The reason is program time. A concrete wall needs excavation, formwork, steel, curing strips and a curing window before anything leans on it. A gabion wall needs a leveled trench, baskets, lacing wire and stone that is usually already on site - two workers and an excavator can be placing the first course the day the cage delivery arrives.

We supply the cages, not the stone. Baskets arrive flat-packed and fold up in minutes; a 40-foot container carries roughly 500–700 units depending on wire gauge, and we can phase deliveries to match your build sequence so filled ground never waits on empty cages. Mesh is double-twist woven to EN 10223-3, which is the specification most civil drawings call out, and every basket ships with its lacing wire and diaphragms. For abutments and headwalls the facing stone is often hand-placed for a clean face; behind it, machine-placed fill does the structural work.

Gabion Walls

• Purpose: Gabion baskets are primarily used for retaining walls, erosion control, and structural support.

• Structure: They are taller and more cubic or rectangular in shape, typically measuring 1m in height and width. They can be stacked to create vertical structures.

• Application: Commonly used for retaining walls, riverbank stabilization, and landscaping. They are filled with large stones or rock to create a solid structure.

• Mesh Size: The mesh openings are typically smaller, ranging from 60mm x 80mm to 100mm x 120mm, to hold larger stones securely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are gabion walls used for in construction?

Bridge abutments on low-volume roads, culvert headwalls and wingwalls, canal and channel walls, cutting walls, and site boundary walls. Anywhere a retaining structure meets water, uneven ground or a tight schedule, gabions compete hard against masonry and concrete.

Why do contractors pick gabion over a concrete wall?

Three reasons we hear most: no curing window, so the wall and the works behind it proceed together; no formwork or skilled masons, so labor is cheaper and easier to schedule; and the wall tolerates settlement that would crack concrete. On remote sites, not hauling in cement matters as much as anything.

What standard should the cages meet?

EN 10223-3 governs double-twist gabion mesh - wire diameter, tolerances and coating weights. If your drawings specify ASTM or a national standard instead, tell us in the inquiry and we will quote to that standard.

How are the walls delivered to a project site?

Flat-packed in bundles, a 40-foot container taking 500–700 baskets depending on gauge. For staged projects we ship in phases against your program, so cages for phase two are not cluttering up phase one.

Does a gabion wall need an engineer's design?

Low gravity walls - roughly up to 3 m in stable ground - follow standard section details. Taller walls, abutments carrying load, or walls in poor soil need an engineer's sizing, which your consultant does from our mesh data. Send us the drawings or the BOQ, and we will return a line-priced quote within 24 hours.
