When You Want the Fence to Actually Block Things

Most metal fencing is see-through on purpose - pickets, mesh, palisade all trade privacy for visibility. A corrugated steel fence goes the other way: ribbed steel sheets fixed into a tubular frame create a solid face that stops sightlines, cuts wind and takes the edge off traffic noise. The corrugation is not decoration - those ribs turn a thin sheet (0.4–0.8mm) into a stiff panel that spans between posts without oil-canning or bowing in the sun. This is the fencing style that dominates Australian residential boundaries, and it is growing fast wherever modern architecture uses horizontal or vertical metal cladding lines. We run it on the same tube, welding and powder coat lines as our steel picket fencing, so a job can mix the two: corrugated sheets for privacy on the street side, open pickets inside the yard where you want to see out.

Design Choices That Matter on a Solid Fence

Sheet thickness by exposure. 0.4–0.5mm suits sheltered residential runs. 0.6–0.8mm is the honest choice for open sites, coastal exposure and any fence over 1.8m - wind load on a solid panel is far higher than on an open picket fence, and thin sheets drum in strong gusts.

Rib direction changes the look completely. Vertical ribs read traditional and shed water down the face. Horizontal ribs are the modern architectural default - they draw the eye along the line and pair with horizontal timber or cladding on the house.

Wind posts. Because the panel face is solid, every post takes full wind pressure. Posts over 1.8m panel height should be 60×60mm minimum, and runs in exposed or coastal locations go to 80×80mm. This is the single most common thing that gets under-specified in quotes we see from other suppliers.

Color. Black is the architectural default and our biggest seller; RAL 6005 green hides fences into planting; woodgrain-effect powder coat gives the warm look of timber with zero maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Corrugated steel or steel picket - how do I choose?

Picket fencing when you want to see through the fence - keeping an eye on kids, showing off a garden, matching a traditional streetscape. Corrugated when you want to stop people seeing in, block wind on a terrace, or quiet down a street-facing yard. Plenty of properties use both: solid corrugated panels facing the road, open pickets or mesh between neighbors where local rules require sightlines.

How much wind can a solid panel fence take?

With 0.6–0.8mm sheets, a framed panel on 60×60mm posts at 2.4m spacing handles normal residential wind exposure. For cyclone regions or open coastal sites, panels need closer post spacing (1.8–2.0m), heavier posts and additional through-bolts - tell us the site exposure and we engineer the post schedule accordingly. A solid fence that lifts in the first storm is not a cheap fence; it is an unfinished one.

Does a solid steel fence reduce noise?

Partly. A solid continuous face reflects a meaningful share of traffic noise compared with an open fence, which does nothing. It is not an acoustic barrier - for real noise problems, purpose-built acoustic fencing is thicker and heavier - but for knocking the edge off street noise on a patio, a 1.8m+ corrugated fence with no gaps is the most cost-effective step up from open fencing.

Are matching gates available?

Yes - single and double swing gates and sliding gates with the same corrugated sheet face, frame profile and color, so the gate disappears into the fence line. Self-closing hinges and lockable latches are fitted at the factory. See our steel fence gate page for the full gate range.

What is the MOQ and lead time?

MOQ is one 20ft container; corrugated panels nest and stack efficiently, so a 20ft carries roughly 500–700 panels depending on sheet thickness and height. Production runs 15–18 days for stock black and green; custom RAL colors and woodgrain effects 20–25 days. Send the perimeter length, height and exposure and we return a panel count, post schedule and container plan within 24 hours.
