PVC coated terra mesh pairs a galvanized steel core with an extruded polymer sheath, giving slope reinforcement panels two layers of protection: the zinc handles general corrosion while the PVC outer layer takes on the conditions zinc alone cannot survive - salt spray, acidic or contaminated soils, road de-icing salts and constant abrasion from sediment. The coating also comes in green, black and gray, letting a reinforced slope disappear into the landscape instead of showing bare galvanized steel.

What the Polymer Layer Adds Over Bare Galvanized Wire

For the most aggressive sites, a zinc-aluminum (Galfan) core under the PVC gives a third layer of defense - the coating takes the first wear, and the Zn-Al alloy behind it corrodes far slower than pure zinc if the sheath is ever damaged.

Does the PVC coating crack in cold climates?
Quality coating stays flexible well below freezing. The critical specification is the coating's low-temperature brittleness point - ask for the test report before ordering for alpine or continental-climate sites, and avoid cheap coatings that harden and micro-crack in freeze-thaw cycles.

Will the color fade over the years?
All polymers fade slowly under UV; the difference between good and poor coating is how slowly and how evenly. Green and black hold their color longest. Fading is a cosmetic issue only - the corrosion protection of the sheath does not depend on its color.

What happens if the coating is cut or scratched during installation?
The galvanized (or Galfan) core continues protecting the wire at the scratch - that is exactly why coated wire always has a metallic layer under the polymer, rather than relying on PVC alone.

When is PVC coating worth the extra cost?
Whenever the wire faces salt, chemicals, high sediment load, or is visible in a landscape setting. For buried, neutral-soil reinforcement with no visual requirement, bare heavy-galvanized mesh is usually more economical.

Can panels be filled like ordinary gabions?
Yes - same stone-fill method, same lacing assembly. The only difference is handling: avoid dragging panels over sharp rock during installation to protect the sheath.
