Hexagonal Wire Gabion Basket

A hexagonal wire gabion basket is the classic woven gabion: a double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh container, partitioned into internal cells, joined to neighboring units and filled with stone on site. The double-twist weave is what separates it from welded gabions - each pair of wires is twisted together at every intersection, so the mesh bends in any direction without losing strength, and a cut wire stops at the twist rather than unraveling the panel. The result is a flexible, permeable, monolithic structure that behaves as one body under load and keeps working where rigid structures crack.

Why the Double-Twist Weave Matters

In hydraulic and earth-retention work, the mesh will eventually get damaged - by debris impact, vandalism or abrasion. The question is what happens next:

Woven double twist - a cut wire is stopped by the neighboring twists; the hole stays local and the basket keeps its strength. Standard woven gabions (such as those made to EN 10223-3) rely on exactly this property

Welded mesh - a broken weld releases the wire along its whole length; repair means wiring the panel back together

Three-dimensional flexibility - the hexagonal weave lets the basket follow uneven ground and settle with the embankment, which is why woven gabions dominate river, marine and landslide work
