Terra Mesh Retaining Wall System

A terra mesh retaining wall is not a basket wall. There is no stone cage facing it - the mesh panel itself is the wall face, and its tail is the reinforcement. Each unit is a shaped panel: face on the outside, a length of mesh extending back into the slope. You place a panel, lay and compact a layer of soil over the tail, place the next panel, and repeat. Half a day into the job the wall is climbing, and by the end of the season the face has vegetated over into a green slope that most people never guess is a structure at all.

The payoff is footprint and cost. A gabion basket wall stands on the stone inside it; a terra mesh wall stands on the earth you already have, so it needs a fraction of the volume and no rock haulage. On road cuttings, residential developments and embankment repairs where the brief says "steep but green," it is usually the cheapest wall that satisfies both words. Faces stand at 60–90 degrees, each layer stepped back a few degrees for the vegetated terrace look, and the mesh tail grips the compacted fill the same way a nail grips timber.

How high can a terra mesh wall go?

Walls of 3–6 m are routine; taller ones are designed layer by layer with longer reinforcement tails into the backfill. Above roughly 5 m, or in poor soil, the wall should be sized by an engineer - we supply the mesh data your consultant needs.

Terra mesh or gabion baskets - which wall?

If the site has rock and the look suits it, gabions are hard to beat. If the brief wants a green face, or stone would have to be hauled in, terra mesh wins on both cost and footprint. On many road projects the two share the job: gabion at the toe, terra mesh up the face.

What soil goes behind the panels?

Site-won granular fill in most cases, placed and compacted in layers as the wall climbs. The tail grips the compacted soil; the wall is only as good as the compaction, which is why our method notes spell out layer thickness and pass counts.

How does the face turn green?

The mesh face is filled at the front with topsoil or a soil-stone mix, then seeded or hydro-mulched. The terraced steps catch rain and hold seed. Within one or two growing seasons the panels disappear under grass and often shrubs.
