Woven gabion mesh, a type of mesh structure made of regularly interwoven metal or synthetic fiber filaments, is widely used in engineering protection and reinforcement.To meet the needs of different geological conditions, load requirements, and environmental adaptability, it can be classified according to various dimensions such as material composition, weaving process, structural form, and surface treatment, forming a relatively systematic classification system.

Based on material composition, woven gabion mesh is mainly divided into two categories: metal and synthetic fiber. Metal gabion mesh is represented by galvanized steel wire, Galfan (zinc-aluminum alloy) coated steel wire, PVC-coated steel wire, and stainless steel wire. It possesses high tensile strength and durability, making it suitable for projects such as water conservancy flood control, coastal protection, and heavy-load slopes exposed to harsh environments for extended periods. Synthetic fiber gabion mesh is made of high-strength polymer materials such as polyester (PET) and polyethylene (PE). It is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and flexible, and is often used in ecological slope protection, temporary support, and landscaping applications where weight and ecological compatibility are critical.

Based on weaving techniques, common gabion meshes include double-twisted and single-twisted gabion meshes. Double-twisted weaving involves adjacent wires intertwining twice or more to form nodes, effectively distributing stress under load and preventing cascading damage caused by the breakage of a single wire. It is widely used in structures requiring high overall stability. Single-twisted weaving fixes the wires with a single crossover, making the process relatively simple and suitable for projects with lower loads or cost sensitivity. In addition, there are hexagonal, rectangular, and irregularly shaped weaving forms, with hexagonal weaving being the mainstream due to its balanced stress distribution and high material utilization.

Based on structural form, gabion meshes can be divided into ordinary gabion boxes, gabion mats, gabion rolls, and custom-made structures. Gabion boxes are closed or semi-closed three-dimensional cage-like structures that can be filled with stones or soil, used for dams, revetments, and foundation reinforcement. Gabion mats are thinner and mainly used for slope protection and surface stabilization. Gabion rolls are easy to lay over large areas and are suitable for flexible erosion control and surface cover. Custom-made structures are cut into special shapes according to project needs to fit complex terrain.

Based on surface treatment, gabion mesh can be categorized into bare material type, galvanized type, Galfan type, PVC coated type, and composite coating type. Bare material type has low cost but limited corrosion resistance, and is mostly used for short-term or indoor environments; galvanized and Galfan types enhance corrosion resistance through metal coatings; PVC coated type coats the metal wire with polymer materials, providing both corrosion protection and aesthetics; composite coating type combines multiple protective processes and is suitable for extreme climates and chemically corrosive environments.

In summary, the classification system of woven gabion mesh reflects the principle of comprehensive matching of materials, processes, forms, and protective performance. Scientific selection can ensure project safety and durability while also considering economy, ease of construction, and eco-friendliness, providing targeted solutions for different application scenarios.
